An earthquake measuring magnitude 7.8 occurred off the Kermadec Islands, northeast of New Zealand. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake has the potential to cause a tsunami. The quake struck on Thursday (07/07/2011) at 07:03 local time. The epicenter is at 131 miles east of Raoul Island, part of the Kermadec Islands, and only has a depth of 30 miles.
As quoted by Reuters , U.S. Pacific Tsunami Center said the quake measuring 7.9 was reported and triggered a tsunami warning for New Zealand, Kermadec Islands and Tonga.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Center said it was not yet sure whether the tsunami warning has confirmed presence of the actual tsunami. But if there is a tsunami will hit the East Cape in New Zealand in Auckland two hours and within three hours of the quake.
