An earthquake with magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter Scale struck the northeastern region of India and Nepal, Sunday (9/18/2011), and killed at least 16 people and destroyed several buildings.
The disaster came at 18:10 local time and its shocks felt in the region along the northeastern and eastern India including the capital New Delhi. The quake was followed by at least two aftershocks measuring M 6.1 and 5.3 on Richter Scale.
At least five people were killed in the state of Sikkim and more than 50 others wounded as reported to state officials, Karma Gyatso. In the state of West Bengal there were four people reportedly died while in Bihar there were two deaths.
Meanwhile, the Nepalese government announced there were five dead included two men and a child who hit the wall that collapsed near the British Embassy in the capital, Katmandu.
Extent of damage and casualties in the disaster can not be known with certainty because of the region there are also many people living in remote areas that are now isolated because landslides caused by the quake.
Lokanthali, Bhaktapur became one of the worst areas affected by the earthquake.
