Deadly Earthquake Rocks Guatemala

Three earthquakes rocked southern Guatemala on Monday in 90 minutes, shaking buildings in the capital, killing at least three people.

The quake struck near the southwestern coast of Guatemala, the area around Santa Rosa sugar cane plantations, and forced the evacuation of about 400 people and cut off the electricity and telephone service.


According to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the first quake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale which is followed about half an hour later by a second earthquake measuring 5.8 magnitude. The other three earthquakes that occurred after with smaller magnitude. Earthquake epicenter was located in the east and northeast Cuilapa and the larger one has a depth of 25 miles (40 km).

They rocked buildings in Guatemala City, about 33 miles (52 km) away.

This area is prone to earthquakes with more than 15,000 small earthquakes since 1979, said Eddy Sanchez, head of the geology agency of Guatemala.

A woman was killed when her house collapsed in the town of Cuilapa, near the epicenter, and two others died after their car was buried in a landslide on the highway.

In Chiquimulilla, there are landslide and made the vehicles fell and buried. There was material damage to vehicles and so far reported two deaths.

Many homes in the area around Santa Rosa that is made of mud bricks and a weak structure makes it vulnerable to collapse during an earthquake. Usually there is a landslide during seismic events, moreover have a lot of rain, so the situation could become more troubled.
